Responsible Department: Planning & Community Development
Lead Staff: Ryan Ericson, Shoreline Planner (780-3719)
Description:
The City is in the process of updating the
Bainbridge Island Shoreline Master Program (SMP) which is a comprehensive vision of how our shorelines will be used over time, combining both policies and regulations for implementing that vision consistent with state law.
Shoreline management is governed under the Washington State Shoreline Management Act (SMA) and is the shared responsibility of the City and the
Washington State Department of Ecology (Local Jurisdiction SMP Update table).
The geographic jurisdiction of the SMP includes all marine waters within the
City’s boundaries and underlying tide lands or bed lands, as well as all shorelands (i.e. uplands) extending landward for 200 feet from the ordinary high water mark, floodways and contiguous floodplains, or associated wetlands.
Our local SMP was adopted consistent with the state SMA, and approved by the Department of Ecology in 1996. In 2003, the state legislature adopted new rules requiring the City to update our existing SMP by December 2011, using new rules (State SMP Guidelines).
