Bainbridge Youth Services
For over 50 years, Bainbridge Youth Services has worked to promote the social and emotional well being of adolescents and young adults in our community.
Our work is primarily focused on providing free and confidential one to one counseling for youth ages 12-19. We have 5 part time counselors who see youth at Sakai, Woodward, Eagle Harbor High School and Bainbridge High School. In 2014 we have provided 1,500 hours of counseling to youth who are seeking help with anxiety, depression, peer issues, family issues, academic stress, gender identity issues & suicide ideation.
Other services include support groups; last spring we hosted 12 teenage girls for an 8-week anxiety support group. Measured levels of anxiety were reduced by 40%.
“BYS saved my life. I was in a dark place when I started with BYS...I am now the person I want to be and am ready to grow even more as I leave BYS to pursue my passions.” Katey, 2013 BHS Graduate
To expand our reach and reduce barriers to access, we have also developed a website where youth and parents can confidentially post questions to either a trained counselor or a physician. www.AskBYS.org is also a rich resource center where information can be sought and appointments with our counselors can be made. Responses to posted questions can be expected within two business days.
In order to improve the overall well being of youth, BYS started a community conversation in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, the Bainbridge Island School District and Raising Resilience (this year the Boys and Girls Club has joined the partnership as well) to look at ways our Island can become a healthier place for kids to grow and thrive. We held 3 Healthy Youth Summits (attended by 200 adults and youth) and identified ways we can improve our community for our youth. Through the Summits, and extensive surveying and data gathering, over 800 youth told us they wanted their voices heard, help finding their passions and to be celebrated for who they are, not what they do.
