Traffic Calming Program - Register as an Island Pace Car
The Neighborhood Pace Car Program is an innovative citizen-based traffic calming program offered by the City of Bainbridge Island. The program is modeled after similar programs that have been successfully implemented in other U.S. cities. The concept is simple. Individually, you pledge to drive courteously and obey the speed limit. Collectively, once many people have signed up, the change to safer driving behavior should be evident.
Residents who pledge to drive responsibly and drive the speed limit on all streets receive a static cling window decal that designates the driver as a Neighborhood Pace Car participant. By displaying the window decal, they encourage others to do the same. As these motorists drive the speed limit, they set the pace for other drivers following behind them.
This program is based on making motorists responsible for their actions and encouraging them to drive safely. Rather than relying on the City to construct a speed hump, which can be very expensive and unappealing in many neighborhoods, motorists will act as mobile traffic calming measures by setting the pace.
To participate in the Neighborhood Pace Car Program, all you need to do is sign the
pledge form to receive your decal and then display it on your car. The hard part comes later as you begin to incorporate that pledge into your driving habits and lifestyle.
