About Operations & Maintenance

The Public Works Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Division is responsible for the overall maintenance of the City’s infrastructure including roads, storm drain, utilities (water, wastewater collection & treatment) and municipal-owned facilities & equipment.

The Division primarily consists of two sections: 1) Transportation, Facilities & Fleet, and 2) Water, Sewer & Storm Drain.

The Transportation section is responsible for the upkeep of all City maintained roadways. Typical functions include street sweeping, mowing, vegetation control, asphalt & concrete repair, pavement markings, signage, shoulder grading, snow & ice removal, and other duties as required to maintain the city’s roadway system in a safe and efficient manner.

The Fleet section is responsible for the maintenance of vehicles and off-road equipment owned and operated by the City. This section also manages the purchasing, storing and distribution of fuels and automotive parts, contract and vendor management and other fleet related duties that support city operations

The Facilities section is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all municipal-owned facilities including Waterfront Park.

The Water section is primarily responsible for water supply, treatment and distribution.

Functions include collecting and testing water samples, chemical treatment for disease prevention, maintaining pumps and electrical motors, fire hydrant and pipe repair.

Monthly meter readings, meter installation & repair services, as well as operate and maintain the automated supervisor data acquisition and control (SCADA) system, and other miscellaneous duties to provide safe drinking water to our customers.

The Wastewater Collection section is primarily responsible to ensure that wastewater generated from residences, businesses and other users is collected and safely transported to the city’s wastewater treatment facility. Other functions include inspection and cleaning of wastewater main lines, manhole inspection and cleaning and general operation and maintenance of the various pump stations. This section also provides emergency power and other miscellaneous duties to preserve this valuable yet largely invisible service.

The Wastewater Treatment section is primarily responsible to treat the wastewater received at the treatment facility in a safe, efficient and environmentally sound manner. This responsibility includes 7 day/week treatment operations, with 500,000 gallons of wastewater treated daily. Other functions include laboratory validation of treatment processing and regulatory compliance for treated wastewater and bio-solids hauling and disposal.

The Storm Drain section is responsible for the upkeep of all municipal drainage conveyances that collect and discharge surface and storm water. Functions include roadside ditch cleaning, shoulder grading, catch basin and storm detention pond inspection/cleaning, street and driveway culvert inspection/cleaning and other miscellaneous duties to prevent flooding and protect the environment.

  • Emergency Operations
Although the entire organization serves as part of the Emergency Operations Center, the Public Works Operations & Maintenance Division is the first response team for wind and rain storms, icy and snow conditions, fallen trees on the roadways and other unplanned events that disrupt or impact the functioning of the city’s infrastructure.
