Site Analysis and Property Constraints

Several different types of assessment have been made of the Strawberry Plant property to inform the design process:

Preliminary Archaeology and Historic Resources - site not likely eligible for National Registry of Historic Places
Existing Environmental Conditions - no contamination in southern portion of property, unknown extent of petroleum contamination in northeast portion
Geotechnical - depth and composition of fill, sediment, chemistry analysis
Geomorphology - coastal geologic context and recommendations for new shoreline configuration
Critical Areas - site is significantly constrained by stream, wetland and shoreline buffers/setbacks

Funding

This project is funded in phases. The shoreline restoration portion of the project is funded by the following agencies:

Elliott Bay Trustee Council (NRDA funds from Wyckoff/Eagle Harbor Superfund Site)
Salmon Recovery Funding Board (State grant)
State Department of Natural Resources (in-kind piling removal as part of larger Puget Sound cleanup project)
City of Bainbridge Island

The restoration design phase is fully funded. In total, the City's contribution is estimated at 14% of the total restoration project cost (not includign property acquisition).

The park improvement portion of the project is not currently budgeted, but will be programmed after design is completed.
